A Merry Mind: Mental Health Tips for a Joyful December
Wow, what a year it’s been! Like many of you, I’ve experienced my share of ups and downs, gained valuable lessons, and continued my journey of healing and growth. These times have been challenging for all of us, and it’s clear we’re each navigating our own struggles. But remember, you’re not alone—we’re in this together.
As December marks a season of transition, it’s the perfect time to reflect, recharge, and reset. Let’s celebrate how far you’ve come, and set intentions for the year ahead. Be kind to yourself, show yourself love and grace, and take this opportunity to focus on your mental health. Here are some practical tips to nurture your mind and spirit as the year draws to a close.
1. Write a Letter to Your Younger Self
My coach recently had me try an exercise that was nothing short of transformative. It was intense and emotional, but I gave myself the space to fully feel it. I cried, I reflected, and in doing so, I uncovered parts of myself that needed love and healing in ways I hadn’t realized.
As the year winds down, it’s the perfect time for reflection. One powerful way to do this is by writing a letter to your younger self. If you’ve faced trauma or challenges, use this moment to honor your resilience and growth.
"Dear younger me, thank you for your strength and courage. Because of you, I’m living a life filled with hope and growth. You endured so much, and I’m so proud of you. Every struggle you faced shaped who I am today. You are my inspiration."
This exercise can be deeply healing, helping you recognize the incredible journey you’ve been on and the strength within you. Remember to do it in a quiet space alone.
2. Visualize Your Future Self
As you prepare for the new year, imagine receiving encouragement from your future self. Picture the life you want and let your future self remind you of the beauty ahead:
"Dear present me, stay the course. The challenges you’re facing are shaping the life you’ve dreamed of. Trust in your path, because the best is yet to come. You are stronger and more capable than you realize—keep moving forward with hope."
This simple exercise can boost your motivation and remind you of your potential.
3. Harness the Power of Journaling
Journaling is one of the most effective ways to reflect on the past year and prepare for the next. Use it to uncover your deeper emotions, gain clarity, and set meaningful goals. Prompts like these can guide your thoughts:
What lessons did I learn this year?
What am I ready to let go of?
What are my intentions for the new year?
Through journaling, you can uncover insights, express gratitude, and create a roadmap for personal growth.
4. Make Rest and Boundaries a Priority
December can feel hectic with holiday preparations and social commitments. Protect your mental health by setting clear boundaries. Give yourself permission to say no to obligations that drain you, and prioritize rest. Remember: rest is not laziness—it’s self-care and it’s productive. Use these affirmations to help when you are feeling guilty about resting:
“Rest is productive”
“I deserve rest”
“I give myself permission to rest”
“Resting is essential for my happiness and health”
“I can take care of my family better when I am rested”
5. Release Perfectionism
The holiday season often comes with pressure to make everything perfect, from decorations to gatherings. Instead, embrace imperfection and focus on creating meaningful moments. Let go of unrealistic expectations and remind yourself that good enough is more than enough. Enjoy the moment, it's fleeting and it will all be done soon!
6. Move Your Body, Nurture Your Mind
Amidst the busyness of December, don’t forget to prioritize movement. Exercise doesn’t have to be intense—dancing, a walk or a yoga session can do wonders for your mental and physical health.
7. Let Go of Control and Embrace Flow
As the year ends, reflect on areas where you’ve tried to control too much. Practice surrendering to life’s natural flow. Trust that what’s meant for you will find its way, and allow yourself to experience the present moment fully.
8. Celebrate Connection and Gratitude
The holidays are a time for connection. Focus on relationships that bring you joy and make space for gratitude. Reach out to loved ones, share your feelings, and appreciate the small moments that bring warmth to your life.
As December unfolds, let this be a season of self-reflection, healing, and hope. Honor your growth, care for your mental health, and step into the new year with courage and compassion for yourself. You are worthy of all the joy and peace the future holds.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Until next time, take care of yourself!
